Name: Senzo Shinryuuji
Nickname: Aegis
Age: 279 (56 at time of death)
Gender: Male
Squad: 4
Rank: Lieutenant
Weapon(s): Personality: One would be quick to notice that Senzo seems consistently annoyed; not to the point of snapping or lashing out, mind, but his responses are generally short and quick, and he doesn't tend to spend much time on any given thing. This gruff personality occasionally gives way to the act of shoving people out of the way if he thinks something's taking too long or that he can do it better, and staring at someone interacting with him (or that he is otherwise interacting with) with a cold expression no matter what they might have done, or not done. As such, he doesn't deal well with authority, either grudgingly accepting it or simply avoiding it altogether.
Not to say that he is a wholly unpleasant person, mind; in fact, most of the effort he puts forth is for those near or under him, however his attitude might appear. He enjoys calming music as much as anyone, when the time is right, and can frequently be found spending his off time reading some story or other... as long as it will get him away from other people that so often inevitably come to dislike him. An inherently solitary being, he takes these opportunities where he can find them, thus avoiding crowds and the like... and sometimes meetings, depending on his mood. He is not very amenable, as none would likely deny, but it can hardly be denied by his general efforts that he is faithful (even though it can sometimes be difficult to see).
As a final point, a source of his plain bitterness is in fact his zanpakuto, mostly in that it is not an offensive type, by any means.
Physical Appearance:- Rough Image:
As with his personality, Senzo's appearance is fairly gruff. His face ever remains only partly shaven, enough to leave a whiskery mustache and beard over a lightly pointed chin. Wild, short, and oft unkempt black hair crowns his head, never allowed to cover his dark blue eyes lest any bit of his field of vision be blocked. He stands tall at 6'3", with a muscular form built from years of combat and lightly tanned skin from years spent frequently out under the sun. Despite this, only a bare few scars cover his body, including a peculiar, straight scar on the front of his neck. Presumably, it was marked upon his spiritual body at the instant of his death, when a sword came to cut through it, but he doesn't seem to pay it any mind.
Bio: In death, as in life, Senzo took every opportunity he received to be on top of everything.
Born to a middle-class family and yet gifted with a servant from that very day, Senzo was raised to believe that he had to make the most of himself that he possibly could. Servants, land, money, weapons; all of them were sources of power, and all of them were what he had to pursue. After all, his parents were putting all the resources they had into his upbringing, so how could he
not become someone highly successful? 'Twould be unheard of, so long as he was forced to keep up with all the teaching they pressed upon him!
Lest he become unsuccessful by any stretch of the imagination, the boy's upbringing consisted of swordplay, military tactics (so much as an affordable tutor could teach), history, and etiquette. A true leader of men, perhaps even a warlord, he would be, if his parents had anything to say about it. And so he became, in time... and the first step on that ladder to greatness was to come to the service of the local lord when he was no less than 15 years of age. Small, local jobs came first as a matter of gaining trust and recognition, before he was able to move on to the 'big task,' so to speak. There came his first challenge to test his ability and mettle: taking a human life. The life of one of the members of the otherwise three-person group Senzo himself was sent with, no less.
It was not an accident, nor an act of bloody betrayal that purportedly necessitated the death; rather, it was a simple thought: 'this cowering man is going to ruin the entire operation.' He might have, too, so led by fear and worry as he was. A swift thrust from behind with Senzo's sword was all it took upon that decision. Nothing was even said by the other two in the group, not after the boy proved so ready to explain himself. Instead, they calmly moved on to resume their given task, leaving the body of the deceased behind. Here Senzo had his first taste of death, and
demons.
Fear, after all, was quite the strong emotion; enough to leave the deceased man clinging desperately to anything he could find. In this case, his own killer; not even grudgingly, but simply as a means of trying to say 'I can still go on.'
Years passed, and Senzo grew from a mere attendant to a lord in his own right; with, as many said, a 'cursed air' about him caused unknowingly by the clinging spirit that none could ever identify. Even with that, he was a strong lord, a
warring lord, and regularly tested his might in capturing, or trying to capture, trade routes and small settlements near his own. They were only small raids, most of the time, but it still made an impact; his presence, his
threat, still became known. And as with all threats, he had to be taken care of, even if it took an eventual gathering of separate forces to remove what forces he had amassed.
Again, there was no betrayal, nor accident; Senzo and his forces were merely bested in combat, and the leader's head was rightly taken. Here the man found the spirit that had clung to him for so long, an echo of part of his own past, and wasted little time in attempting to strike the man he had killed so long ago down permanently, now they both shared ethereal forms. The attempt ended poorly; the other was far more used to being a spirit, and simply eluded Senzo's efforts, persistent as they became.
Then came the Shinigami to put them both to rest, and the once lord grudgingly accepted his removal from the world of the living, in the thought that he could remake his status on the other side. It took him far longer than he had initially hoped, but there was no problem there; he no longer aged, and had all the time in the world! Knowledge of spiritual power and how to use it was soon added to everything else his mind had claimed, and the man worked his way steadily upward into the ranks of Shinigami through the persistent study and practice that he had always been taught by. If he knew he would end up in the division of healers with such a...
detestable zanpakuto, he might not have bothered, but such became the fate of the former lord become supporter.
Inner world appearance: Senzo's inner world seems to be a contradiction of itself. Where patches of grass grow, the ground beneath appears dead and lifeless; conversely, where there is no grass, the soil appears to be quite a healthy, rich brown. Most strangely of all, the sky above this open plain is a canvas of blues and golds, lacking any form of stars or clouds otherwise and casting an interesting light upon the field below.
ZanpakutōName: Kusatoku (Grass Shield)
Zanpakutō spirit: Kusatoku as a spirit can easily be called a wolf, though there are a few particular oddities about it. Its eyes are a pure, dark green, wholly lacking any other color, and its fur is a dull brown, flecked with green spots that one might swear were leaves. Personality-wise, it is calm and stoic, rather befitting its power.
Sealed form: In its sealed form, Kusatoku appears as a standard, double-edged long sword, quite near identical to the one Senzo used in life. The silvery blade extends out from the hilt wrapped in black cloth, and the sword's guard is quite definably rectangular.
Shikai Call out phrase: "Bloom and grow, Kusatoku."
Shikai description: Rather than an actual weapon, as such, Kusatoku in Shikai form is a large shield, colored dull brown with flecks of green just like its spirit form. The shield is rounded widely at the top, to curve steadily inward and end with a thinner, but just as rounded, bottom. In terms of size, it is 5'3" high and 3' wide; a difficult item to carry at the best of times if just for that.
Ability: Nature manipulation.
Techniques:-
Aegis Shield: When planted into the ground, Kusatoku becomes more difficult to break; the more fertile the ground it is planted in, the more hardness it attains, even to the point of being able to stand on its own, potentially unmoving except by physical act of its wielder.
-
Wild Greens: Still another ability reliant on Kusatoku being planted into sufficiently fertile ground, this one can call upon plants themselves. Some medicinal, some poisonous, some tough to break through, the plants range in their particular effects. Twenty feet from where the shield itself is planted is the limit of where the plants can be called, so long as the ground affords any ability to nourish them.

"Senzo."
His name being called? Bah, no matter; he was in the middle of reading, he'd get to it later. Surely it couldn't be of so much importance that it required his absolute immediate attention. Sure, the speaker himself stood quite nearby, arms crossed and looking stern as if there was no other expression in the world, but it would be fine to wait a few more moments and finish this page. It always was.
"Senzo."
Two more paragraphs remained, and for all intents and purposes, the seated Shinigami appeared not to hear his colleague's more forceful call. Not once did the dark blue eyes remove their gaze even slightly from the progression of black characters on pure white paper. Not once was there even so much as a flinch; there was no movement beyond what was absolutely necessary for reading and making sure the pages didn't move.
"Senzo!"
Ah, and what great timing for that last call; he'd just finished the final word upon the page, better yet the end of a paragraph. Now, only now could his attention be safely drawn elsewhere, and the dark blue eyes of one Senzo Shinryuuji finally cast their passive gaze up to the face of his caller.
"What? You know as well as anyone that I'm not going to mind anything until I finish reading what I intend to," Senzo spoke. Now he was done reading for the moment, he closed his book lightly over a single thumb that was holding his place and set it upon his lap to be temporarily removed from his direct attention. Anyone would likely say that he'd no right to be giving the cold stare that he was, but such was just how he was. Even with the one he grudgingly called Captain.
"You have a job over in sector three, now get moving." Short and to the point, as Senzo had come to expect from the Captain; then again, it was often the only way to get the man to 'get moving.' It didn't always work, but in this case, perhaps it could be said that the Lieutenant was feeling generous.
"Yeah, fine. This better not take long, though," Senzo lightly grumbled, picking himself up carefully from his seated position with a little groan as his stiffened legs protested. The meager protest was ultimately ignored even as it persisted through the first three steps forward, not to return all through the walk to the decreed point of need. "So then, what's the problem?" Senzo asked, casting his gaze across the three he'd come upon. He didn't even have to ask, though; it was clear that a spar had gone a little far, judging by the fact that the perpetrator was even still here. One of these menial little tasks again.
"Well... um..."
"Spit it out, kid," Senzo grumbled in protest to said perpetrator's shy stammering. "No, forget that; just say your apologies and let me be done with this. Now then... bloom and grow, Kusatoku," he spoke. By his behest, his drawn blade indeed grew -- changed shape, more so -- into the shield that the Shinigami had become known for. Into the ground it was forcefully planted, and from that very ground vine-like plants grew, surrounding the wounded areas of the one upon the ground. Senzo himself stood inattentively by, opting to watch his surroundings rather than the 'show,' so to speak. He neither looked nor spoke when the zanpakuto had finished its task, instead trudging off in full intent to return to the book that still resided within one hand, trapping that thumb.
"Um... thank you, sir..." came the shaky show of gratitude from the one who had been healed. Senzo's reputation preceded him, and a response to that thanks was neither expected nor given, save a slight scoff. Always like this, thanks to such a detestable zanpakuto; worse still, the injured boy was in division 11, the combat squad! 'Twas a place for him if not for... ah, no matter. Even with Kusatoku, he intended to be a lord again, someday, somehow.
For now, though, a continuation of the tale hidden in text awaited.
